How to get here?

Newtown Castle is located a mile and a half outside the village of Ballyvaughan on the Lisdoonvarna direction and can be easily accessed. We are one hour driving distance from Shannon Airport and three hours drive from Dublin.

There are various options to travel to and from the Burren region and choosing the best option can have its challenges. Whether you choose to travel by bus, train, car or maybe cycle or walk, we encourage you to pick the most sustainable and ecological way. Please have a look at the options below!

Travelling by bus or train

Newtown Castle is located in County Clare, 2.4 km South of Ballyvaughan village off of the N67 road.

From Dublin, you can take a bus to Galway and then another to Ballyvaughan. It takes around two and a half to three hours to travel from Dublin to Galway via the public Bus Eireann service or either one of the private operators GoBus and City Link.

If travelling by train, have a look at Irish Rail for information on schedules from Dublin to Galway.

From Galway, Ballyvaughan can be reached by bus through the Bus Eireann daily service #350 between Galway city and Ennis. Details and timetables are available from www.buseireann.ie, but please check these regularly as schedules get updated at various times of year.

From Shannon: while there is no direct bus service from Shannon Airport to Ballyvaughan, it is possible to take connecting buses to Galway or Ennis and then on to Ballyvaughan.

From Ennis: Local Link is a local public transport bus service that provides better links between rural transport and national bus and rail services throughout Ireland. It is a great and reliable option for travelling  from Ennis to Ballyvaughan. The relevant timetables for the area are the C5 , C7, C8, C11 & C14 serving many towns around the Burren including Ballyvaughan.

Travelling by car

The most direct route to Newtown Castle from abroad is via Shannon airport. Numerous airlines service Shannon Airport including Aer Lingus, American Airlines, US Airlines, Air Canada, Delta Airlines etc. Further information is available from www.shannonairport.ie .

Dublin Airport is approx. 3 hours drive from Ballyvaughan and is accessible from airports all over the world.  Further information on airlines and destinations serviced by Dublin Airport is available from www.dublinairport.com.

Using Google maps, the easiest way to find our location is to type in our eircode – H91 H299 – into your navigation system and it will bring you right to our doorstep!

Cycling or walking in the Burren

The best way to explore the Burren is through its many walking trails and cycling routes.

If you choose to cycle around the Burren, please feel free to download the North Clare cycling map or the four looped cycle routes starting from Doolin. To hire a bike in the area, please visit Doolin rent a bike  or E-whizz.

Exploring the Burren area on foot is a real joy and there are many trails and walks suited to all – some more streneous than others, but all very enjoyable nevertheless. Please have a look here for a list of walks and trail available in the area.
